On June 5th and 6th 2011, Save the Children was invited to the NGO session of “KAMA Love Music Festival”.
It was the first time the China Programme has joined such a large public event. Taking the EVERY ONE campaign as the focus, a series of on-site interactive activities were organized to engage the public. Festival goers were invited to support the campaign by leaving their thumb print or having their photo taken with their thumbs up. Short videos about the campaign were also screened. By taking these actions, the public was offered a platform to express support and make a commitment to reducing under five mortality and promoting child survival. Over 7,000 ‘Hand Raiser Actions’ were collected over the two day festival.
Save the Children’s colourful tent and lively exhibition attracted a wide range of music festival audiences. In addition to taking action to support the EVERY ONE campaign, audiences were also interested in enriching their understanding of Save the Children’s work. Many engaged directly with staff or chose to read about Save the Children programs in detail. Many people expressed their willingness to become Save the Children volunteers in the future.
Save the Children staff and interns also distributed EVERY ONE logo stickers, T-shirts, handbags, notebooks, wristbands, pens, and DVDs which helped spread the child survival message as festival goers wearing EVERY ONE paraphernalia moved through the crowds.
The NGO session, called NGOgo!, was co-hosted by Beijing Lovinc Culture Ltd, Youth Elevation Association of Peking University and Tsinghua University Youth League Committee. It was planned by Head-Heart-Hand Creative Public Institution and located at the ground in south of the National Olympic Sports Center. NGOgo! had three themes: Education, Life and Environment. It encouraged diversity of ideas, interactive experiences and art displays as creative ways to capture the attention of festival goers. It also called upon public interest and advocated for public awareness.
On the afternoon of June 5th, the Beijing Office Mums’ Club organized an outdoor parent-child gathering as part of Save the Children’s activities. The club presented a vivid presentation on the importance of supporting every child’s right to survive and thrive.
Through the two-day event, the newly launched official Weibos of Save the Children and the EVERY ONE campaign were used to relate Save the Children’s activities at the festival in real time.
