Tuesday 1st December was the 22nd World AIDS Day. This year’s theme was “Universal Access and Human Rights”, stressing the importance of universal access and human rights protection in AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support.
In the lead up to World AIDS Day, Save the Children joined forces with partner organisations to launch a range of AIDS prevention activities in Shanghai and Yunnan’s Long Chuan County, focusing on migrant women and children and young people in the countryside.
AIDS stands for “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome”, a disease attacking the body’s immune system. AIDS can be transmitted through the blood, sexual intercourse or from mother to child.
To promote AIDS prevention and awareness among migrant communities, in particular among migrant women and children, the Save the Children China Programme partnered with the Shanghai Migrant Welfare Fund and the Family Planning, Health and Disease Control departments of Jiuting township, Sonjiang district, Shanghai to hold a “World AIDS Day Awareness-raising Event” . The event took place on the 28th November in the Songjiang District’s Jiuting Square.
Save the Children and programme partners built a moveable stage, using performances and question and answer sessions to attract and encourage migrant workers to learn more about AIDS prevention. Working under a banner in the square with basic AIDS prevention knowledge, Save the Children staff distributed pamphlets about AIDS prevention to migrant workers and passersby. Save the Children and partners also visited a couch factory promoting AIDS awareness to the factory workers. The workers said that they would use information they learned from the visit to extend messages about AIDS prevention to their friends and family members.
On the same day in Yunnan province, Save the Children held AIDS awareness activities in Longchuan, a county situated close to the China-Myanmar border and an area which has long suffered the affects of drug addiction and HIV/AIDS. Partnering with the Longchuan Red Cross and the Zhangfeng township government, close to 200 children took part in performances, quizzes and games which aimed to boost the self confidence of children living with AIDS and increase children’s awareness of AIDS and in turn the ability to make decisions about their health.
