SC draws attention to International Day for Disabled Persons

3 December 2009 was the 18th International Day for Disabled Persons. This year’s theme was “Making the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) disability-inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world”.

To mark the 18th International Day for Disabled Persons, Save the Children developed a set of illustrations showing common interactions with people with disabilities. SC hopes that the resources will raise awareness about the importance of respect and equal treatment for disabled persons.

Due to their physical impairment and amongst the backdrop of strong social bias and discrimination, disabled persons often aren’t assured of the rights they deserve. To raise awareness of disability issues, in 1976 the United Nations declared 1981 as the International Year for Disabled Persons. In December 1982, the 37th UN General Assembly established the “World Program of Action concerning Disabled Persons”, setting 1983 to 1992 as the UN decade for disabled persons. In October 1992, for the first time since the founding of the UN, the 47th UN General Assembly held a special session on disability issues, electing December 3 the International Day of Disabled Persons. The Day provides an opportunity to mobilize action to achieve the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities.
