Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, was hit by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on January 12. This is their worst quake in 200 years. The epicentre of the seism was only 10 miles (16 km) from Port-au-Prince and many buildings have been toppled. Hundreds of thousands of people are feared dead and injured.
Save the Children has deployed emergency teams and begun relief efforts. Amidst continuing aftershocks, the staff Wednesday have begun to assess damage and the needs facing children and their families after the devastating earthquake. Save the Children is working quickly to distribute relief kits to families and appeal to help the children and families in the earthquake.
Save the Children has worked in Haiti since 1985, primarily in the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the Central Plateau region, providing health, education, protection and food security programs to vulnerable children.
