A third round of supplies sent by Save the Children to Yushu, including 2,135 household and hygiene kits, made its way to the earthquake zone on May 10^th. Extensive evaluation activities were conducted to ensure that the supplies were distributed quickly and reached those in the most need. Save the Children is in the process of setting up special child-friendly spaces equipped with tents, toys, books and other supplies for mothers and children affected by the quake.

On May 9th, Save the Children sent a third disaster relief team to Yushu, comprising six members from the Tibet, Sichuan and the Yunnan offices, specialists in health, child protection and disaster relief work. The team also had the help of 11 volunteers, who after receiving training, set about coordinating the distribution of supplies and establishing the child-friendly spaces.

An evaluation also revealed the need for health awareness training in the zone, where the disaster relief team carried out sessions on personal hygiene and common disease prevention.

“Children is no doubt the biggest victim of the earthquake in Yushu. We urgently need more funds to better meet the needs of children affected by the earthquake” said Wyndham James, Country Director for Save the Children in China. "The establishment of child-friendly spaces which followed the rescue efforts in Sichuan proved to be very successful so we hope that we can achieve the same for Qinghai, to the benefit of local children".

The first round of provisions sent by Save the Children reached the disaster zone on April 18th and included 3,600 servings of instant noodles, 2,400 containers of bottled water, 450 sets of children’s winter clothes, 300 blankets, 21 tons of barley flour and 100 boxes of tea. The second relief effort comprised 3,000 hygiene supplies (including bowls for face-washing, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, nail clippers, combs and towels) which arrived on the 26^th and were fully distributed by the 29^th. The provisions went to the students and their families at more than 10 schools in the Yushu area.
