, Mr. Hu Yueming and Ms. Chen Yuhua - Secretary-general and Deputy Secretary-general of Shanghai Population Welfare Foundation, and some officials from Minhang Population and Family Planning Commission and Minhang Family Planning Association.
A P&G Live, Learn and Thrive (LLT) supported Shanghai Migrant Children’s School Health and Nutrition Program was launched on June 1st this year at five migrant primary schools including Maqiao. This is Dr. Hassall's first visit to the project schools after the launch. The visitors toured the newly revamped school clinic and had chance to speak to the children benefiting from the project on health topics that affect them.
Minhang, a suburban district of Shanghai, is home to a large population of migrant workers; and the 950 children at Maqiao Primary School, a privately-run school in that district, are exclusively from migrant families. The one year Shanghai Migrant Children’s School Health and Nutrition Project, supported by P&G LLT and implemented by Save the Children China Programme, aims to improve the health and nutrition status of migrant children by increasing the children’s access to and use of school health and nutrition services, improving health and hygiene knowledge, attitudes and practices, and establishing basic health and nutrition related school policies and support at all levels. By the end of the project a total of 7,000 migrant children aged 6-13 will directly benefit from improved health and nutrition.
This program has received strong support and collaboration from governmental partners including Shanghai Population Welfare Foundation, Minhang Population and Family Planning Commission and Minhang Family Planning Association.
On the morning of the 16th of August, Dr. Chris. Hassall and his delegation, in the company of Mr. Wyndham. James, Ms. Wang Le – Manager of Save the Children’s Shanghai Programme and representatives of government partners, visited the school's clinic, which was established with the support of P&G LLT. Previously the primary school was in need of essential basic clinic facilities and did not have dedicated health teachers. But now, with P&G's help, the refurnished school clinic has met the basic requirements stipulated by the local Education Bureau. P&G employees working in and around Minhang District, some of whom also joined the visit, have expressed great commitment to do their part and volunteer at the project schools.
"Child participation" is one of the important principles for the work of Save the Children. To better leverage children's knowledge and create child-friendly project materials, Save the Children organised a feedback session on a Health Education Picture Album for Primary School Pupils. Children from Maqiao school received a copy of the book and worked with Save the Children staff and volunteers to provide comments and suggestions on how to revised and improve the book. During the visit, the P&G LLT delegation were able to witness the children enthusiastically participating in the discussions and offering practical and innovative recommendations that was both exciting and impressive.
"This is my first visit to the P&G LLT supported health education programme in China, and I am really happily surprised by what the children are doing. I’d like to extend my thanks to all the children who’re here today and believe their efforts will benefit much more children in China ", said Dr. Hassall.
"P&G is dedicated to beautifying the lives of Chinese customers, with particular care about children’s health. We’re very honoured to partner with Save the Children and the Shanghai Population Welfare Foundation to help improve the nutrition and health conditions of migrant children in Shanghai." Dr. Hassall continued.
"We are very pleased to have the support from P&G", said Mr. James. "Dr. Hassall's visit to the project school in Shanghai will greatly fuel the cooperation between P&G and Save the Children China Programme. We believe that there are further opportunities for both parties to cooperate in wider fields."
On the same day, Dr. Hassall and Mr. James held talks with representatives of governmental partners including Shanghai Population Welfare Foundation and Minhang Population and Family Planning Commission.
