SC held joint conference with MoFA on NGOs in Globalization

The Joint Conference of NGOs in Globalization was held on August 27th 2010 by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Save the Children and Tsinghua University’s NGO Research Centre.

Cheng Guoping, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister, delivered an opening speech at the conference. Mr. Cheng spoke highly of International NGOs and said the NGOs will not only make a great contribution to China’s economic development, but also help to enhance global communication on this issue. Additionally, he expressed a warm welcome to International NGOs who are hoping to work in China. He added that NGO regulations in China will continue to be developed over the next few years, these regulations will establish cooperative relationships between China, and International NGOs. Luo Zhaohui – General Director of External Security Affairs Department and Mr Wu Chuntai – Deputy General Director of External Security Affairs Department, also attended the conference.

Delegates from the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MoCA) and Tsinghua University’s NGO Research Centre both gave speeches on the “Current Condition and Development of NGOs”. Wyndham James—Save the Children China Program Country Director, said Save the Children China Program has mainly implemented projects through cooperation with Government Departments and “mass organizations”. Save the Children (SC) has received help and support from its partners throughout China. Government departments have adopted a number of projects run originally by SC, which has benefited a greater number of children. Mr. James indicated that SC would continue to stick to the practice of non-government, non-politics, non-religion and non-profit. SC will also continue to follow China’s regulations and frameworks, with an emphasis on communication with government departments and seeking government support for project implementation and legal registration.

In the session of “Functions of NGOs for Social and Economic Development”, Zhao Zhonghua—Head of Programmes of Save the Children China Program, introduce SC’s health projects in China, and presented the aim of “EVERYONE”, a global campaign SC launched last year to help achieve MDG 4. Delegates from the Ministry of Health’s International Department, the Beijing Normal University Philosophy Department and the United Nations Association of China also delivered interesting speeches.

Delegates from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Health, the State Council's Poverty Relief Office, United Nations Association of China and other academic agencies and NGOs all participated in this joint conference. Delegates all said the joint conference provided a stage for interactive exchange, which has helped to develop trust and explore new ideas together. The conference has laid strong foundations for NGOs to communicate and solve problems together in the future.

Before the opening ceremony, Mr. Cheng Guoping—Assistant Foreign Minister, met with Wyndham James—Country Director of Save the Children and Professer Wang Ming – Director of Tsinghua University NGO Research Centre.
