Abstract

Around the same time that the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations, after being ten years in the making, anthropological and sociological research on children bore fruit with the publication of new ideas about childhood.  Use of this new paradigm of childhood is as important for work with children as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).  This is not only because it refutes older but dominant western models of childhood, but also because it recognises children’s own social agency and so underpins the importance of children’s participation and citizenship.
