Name: Research on Chinese private philanthropic funding market (corporates, foundations, High-Net Worth Individuals – HNWI)
Role: Consultant
Focal department within Save the Children China): Donor Relations and Awards Management (DRAM), through DRAM Director
Child Safeguarding: Consultant will need to abide by Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding Policy
Purpose: To conduct research for the purpose of understanding the Chinese donor landscape as it pertains to corporates, foundations, and high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in China, and scoping potential funding opportunities from those donors for Save the Children programs in China and abroad upon becoming a domestic entity in China.
Tasks (time period):
a) Market analysis and List of Prospects
· Conduct market analysis to identify international corporates, foundations, and HNWIs that Save the Children could engage with for potential future humanitarian and development funding and partnership opportunities, for both Save the Children in China (in line with the Country Office’s Country Strategic Plan and programming priorities for 2019-2021) and abroad (in line with Save the Children International’s geographical presence and global programming priorities)
· Create a list of corporate, foundation, and HNWIs prospect donors and/or partners for Save the Children China to engage domestically and internationally, prioritizing the US, UK, Swiss, Swedish, Danish, and Italian markets
· Highlight the strategic CSR focus by thematic and/or geographically area for Chinese corporates, foundations, and HNWIs
b) Outreach strategy
· Develop outreach strategies (one for corporate, one for foundations, one for HNWIs) for Save the Children China to implement upon establishing a domestic entity
c) If applicable: Participate in selected SC China meetings and participation and support of activities for learning purposes
Deliverables:
a) A China fundraising market analysis report (focus on international corporates, foundations, HNWIs)
b) A list of prospects
c) An outreach strategy
Tentative timeline
- July 2019: Meetings and calls with Save the Children China and relevant Save the Children International staff, to review existing analysis, understand internal ways of working, clarify the scope and expected outcomes of the research, and develop and finalize a research plan
- August-September 2019: Actual market analysis, through desk-based analysis and external meetings (accompanied by Save the Children China colleagues) with potential prospect donors
- October 2019: Produce list of prospect donors and outreach strategies
Organizational details
- Consultancy fees covered by the Save the Children China CO
- Support required from SC China (if needed): Desk space, printing and scanning in the office, field visit organization

Security and Child Safeguarding briefing and clarification of mutual expectations and responsibilities with relevant SC China teams/colleagues upon contract signature
